If you are driving to Andorra in winter, you may be wondering whether you need to carry snow chains. The short answer is: yes, from 1 November to 15 May you must carry winter equipment. This means winter tyres or snow chains in your boot.
The rules apply across Andorra's entire road network, seven days a week. If you are stopped without the required equipment, the fine is €90.
📅 Dates and Legal Requirements
The rule is clear: from 1 November to 15 May, all vehicles must travel with special equipment for snow and ice. This includes:
- • Winter tyres (marked M+S or 3PMSF)
- • Or snow chains in the boot (even if you are not using them)
The rule applies every day, including Sundays and public holidays, and covers the country's entire road network.
🚗 My Personal Recommendations
Option 1: Chains Only
If you are staying in the centre (Andorra la Vella or Escaldes), it usually does not snow there, so carrying chains in your boot is generally enough. If you are visiting Andorra but will not drive above Encamp (towards the ski slopes), there is usually no snow in the centre. In that case, carrying chains in your boot is sufficient.
However, you need to know how to fit them just in case. Even if it probably will not snow in central Andorra la Vella or Escaldes, carrying them is still compulsory.
Option 2: Winter Tyres + Chains
I always keep chains in my boot from November to May, even when I have winter tyres. You never know when you might need them. If you are arriving from France or plan to drive to the ski slopes, I recommend using winter tyres as well as carrying chains. Mountain roads are often snowy or icy, and driving with chains fitted all the time is difficult and uncomfortable.
Winter tyres give you better grip on compacted snow or ice; fit chains only if the snowfall is very heavy.
💡 Practical Tips for Driving in Snow
If you need to drive in the snow, here are some important tips:
Drive Slowly and Plan Ahead
When there is snow, avoid sudden movements at the wheel. I have experienced trying to brake only to find that the car does not stop because the road is icy. That is why it is better to drive slowly and anticipate.
Do not make sudden steering movements, brake gently and accelerate slowly. The key is to anticipate everything earlier than you would on a dry road.
How to Fit Snow Chains
Fit chains to the driven wheels:
- • Front-wheel drive: Fit chains to the front wheels
- • Rear-wheel drive: Fit chains to the rear wheels
- • 4x4 / AWD: Fitting chains to all four wheels is ideal. If you have only one set, fit it to the front wheels, unless your vehicle manufacturer specifies otherwise.
Once fitted, you must not drive faster than 50 km/h. Drive slowly and carefully, and follow the instructions for your vehicle and chains.
The Most Challenging Roads
The roads where it snows most and where you are most likely to have problems are:
- • The French border crossing into Andorra (the high-altitude stretch before Pas de la Casa)
- • Envalira Pass (after Pas de la Casa, as you climb the mountain)
These areas get the most snow, and police checks are more frequent there during snowfall.
