Meritxell Avenue (Avinguda Meritxell in Catalan) and Carlemany Avenue (Avinguda Carlemany) form Andorra's main shopping district, known as the Shopping Mile. This lively shopping route connects Andorra la Vella with Escaldes-Engordany, with fashion shops, perfumeries, restaurants and some of Andorra's best hotels.

It is the perfect place to spend a full day shopping and enjoying things to do in both parishes.

Practical tips for visiting and parking

Avinguda Meritxell runs through the centre of Andorra la Vella and continues into Avinguda Carlemany in Escaldes-Engordany. Together, they form the country's best-known shopping stretch, with department stores, fashion, sports, beauty and electronics shops.

The Carlemany section is known as Vivand. Much of the route is pedestrianised, although traffic resumes around the Dalí clock on part of Meritxell. The distinction matters when planning a walk: Meritxell is in Andorra la Vella, while Carlemany is in Escaldes-Engordany.

Most shops open from 10:00 to 20:00; some close between 13:30 and 15:00, and Sunday hours are usually shorter, often ending at 19:00. Many shops close on 1 January, 14 March, 8 September and 25 December. Check individual shop schedules before travelling.

The Shopping Mile: Meritxell and Carlemany avenues

Avinguda Meritxell runs through the centre of Andorra la Vella and continues towards Escaldes-Engordany as Avinguda Carlemany. Together, they form a single pedestrian shopping route known as the Shopping Mile.

For decades, cars and buses travelled along the avenues; today, much of the route is pedestrianised. Avinguda Carlemany and the beginning of Avinguda Meritxell are fully pedestrianised, but Meritxell becomes a mixed-traffic street around the Dalí clock (Noblesse du Temps). This transformation created a landmark shopping walk where visitors can stroll between shops, cafés and window displays in both parishes.

The Andorra la Vella stretch is Avinguda Meritxell; the Escaldes-Engordany stretch is Avinguda Carlemany. Where relevant, this guide identifies each location as “Meritxell – Andorra la Vella” or “Carlemany – Escaldes-Engordany”.

Today, Meritxell Avenue is synonymous with shopping: it brings together many of the Principality's leading international brands, local shops and most popular shopping centres.

Larger department stores and shopping centres offer many categories under one roof, while specialist retailers are spread along the avenue and nearby streets. The choice ranges from fashion and jewellery to electronics, sportswear and perfume. Remember that customs allowances apply when you leave Andorra.

My personal experience

When I think of Meritxell Avenue, I remember when cars and buses still travelled along it. Today, by contrast, it is a quiet pedestrian street where you can stroll at your own pace.

Since Illa Carlemany was built, Andorra's tourist centre has shifted a little towards this newer area, although Meritxell remains the commercial heart.

There are many small perfume and electronics shops, as well as large department stores such as Pyrénées and The Embassy. I always like to walk over to “the towers”—those tall, modern buildings—because they give the city a sense of progress and technology.

In summer, I usually finish the afternoon at Prat del Roure, relaxing on the grass while children play or exercise in the street-workout area. It is the perfect way to end the day after enjoying Meritxell Avenue.
