Escape the Heatwave in Andorra

Observations collected from 12 to 18 August 2026

When Toulouse was nearing 40°C in the middle of a heatwave and Barcelona topped 36°C at midday, the Andorran Pyrenees, less than three hours away by road, offered some relief. I took the official data from the latest heatwave in August 2026—the fifth of the summer in southern France—and compared each day's maximum temperature in four places: Toulouse, Barcelona, Andorra la Vella and El Pas de la Casa.

The conclusion is clear: the heat suffocating the plains does not reach the mountains. On the day Toulouse hit its weekly high, 39.5°C on 13 August, the thermometer in El Pas de la Casa reached just 23.7°C — 15.8°C cooler on the same afternoon.

And it was not just a lucky day. Over the seven-day average, El Pas de la Casa was 12.4°C cooler than Toulouse and 12.3°C cooler than Barcelona, while Andorra la Vella was 4.6°C below the Occitan capital. The chart and full table below show the day-by-day figures so you can check them for yourself. Spoiler: if you are sweltering again this summer, a getaway to the Pyrenees is not just a nice idea — it is pure mathematics.

Daily maximum temperature

Data in °C, from 12 to 18 August 2026

Table 1. Daily maximum temperatures in °C from 12 to 18 August 2026. El Pas de la Casa figures are from the Grau Roig-FEDA station (2,090 m), the National Meteorological Service of Andorra's automatic station most representative of the town (the manual El Pas de la Casa station only operates in winter).

Toulouse met the heatwave threshold (36°C or above for three consecutive days) from 12 to 14 August, peaking at 39.5°C on the 13th. Meanwhile, El Pas de la Casa barely reached 23.7°C that day — a difference of almost 16°C in practice. Barcelona peaked a day later, at 36.6°C on the 14th, when El Pas de la Casa was at 23.3°C.

Why is it so cool up high (and down in the valley too)?

The key is altitude. For every 1,000 metres you climb, the temperature falls by around 6.5°C on average. Toulouse is 151 metres above sea level; Andorra la Vella is around 1,022 metres in the centre (the station recording these figures, FEDA Central, is at 1,135 metres); El Pas de la Casa is above 2,000 metres. On top of that, during a heatwave the mountains do not accumulate heat because warm air stays below and cool summit air does not mix with the air on the plains: meteorologists call this a temperature inversion.

So Andorra is not just “a little cooler”: weekly highs in Andorra la Vella stayed between 25.8°C and 32.7°C in the middle of summer and a heatwave. El Pas de la Casa did not exceed 23.7°C all week. Up here, there is no heatwave: just an afternoon by the pool without sweating, a long-sleeved shirt, or a jumper in the evening.

You notice the cool at night too: while temperatures in Toulouse stayed at 20–22°C (the so-called tropical nights, dreadful for sleeping), they dropped to 8.5°C in El Pas de la Casa on the night of 16 August. Sleeping with the window open and a blanket is the way to go.

The conclusion: the escape from the heat is two hours from Toulouse

If you live in or near Toulouse, you are about two hours by car from a place where the heatwave simply does not exist. El Pas de la Casa is 2 h 10 min from Toulouse via the Port d'Envalira (or 1 h 40 min through the tunnel), and Andorra la Vella is under 2 h 45 min away. From Barcelona, it is around 2.5–3 hours via the N-145 and La Seu d'Urgell, or three hours directly. Every road climbs.

✅

Andorra la Vella — a city at around 1,022 m: ideal for a day trip, a walk along Meritxell Avenue and a climb up to Lake Engolasters to cool off. The week's average maximum was 29.7°C.

✅

El Pas de la Casa — the French border at 2,000 m+: the coolest place in this comparison. Ideal for a meal stop or an evening stroll without air conditioning anywhere because you do not need it. It is on the way to France and your first breath of fresh air just after crossing the border.

And you do not need a heatwave: the difference is almost always the same in summer. If you are coming to spend a few days in the mountains, our guide to where to stay in Andorra can help you choose an area. I recommend it for a good night's sleep — it is wonderful to sleep in the higher parishes, 10–15°C cooler than down below.

Methodology

The week chosen is the latest heatwave of summer 2026 in southern France: Météo-France issued an orange heatwave alert for Haute-Garonne on 12 August and lifted it on the 17th. I use the daily maximum temperature (Tmax) from each official station for the seven days of the event (12–18 August), and also mention the minimum temperature (Tmin) in the passages about night-time temperatures. For El Pas de la Casa, I use the Grau Roig-FEDA station (2,090 m), the National Meteorological Service of Andorra's automatic station most representative of the town: the manual El Pas de la Casa station (2,120 m) only carries out snow and weather observations in winter and does not publish summer temperatures. Andorran data for August 2026 is pending final validation. All values are observed (measured), not forecasts.
